BACKGROUND INFORMATION Most 1994 MMSA (Mitsubishi Motor Sales of America, Inc.) vehicles are equipped with a "two-turn" door lock on the driver's side door. This new feature is found on all 1994 MMSA vehicles with power door locks, except Eclipse. Recent warranty claims indicate there is customer confusion on the correct operation of the two-turn door lock, especially when vehicles are equipped with remote keyless entry (RKE) and/or associated alarm systems. This bulletin provides a brief operational explanation of the two-turn door lock system and the interaction of the system with RKE and/or associated alarm systems. (Further details on these systems can be found in the referenced publications listed at the end of this bulletin. DESCRIPTION The two-turn door lock offers vehicle owners the option of unlocking just the driver's side door or all doors through a simple alteration of the key turning method. With all doors locked, here is how it works: To unlock just the driver's side door, insert the key in the door lock and turn it once to the right. To unlock all doors, insert the key, turn it to the right, return it to the vertical position, then turn it to the right a second time. See Fig 1 . The passenger's side door lock does not have the two-turn unlocking feature. Fig 1: Two Turn Door Unlocking VEHICLES WITH OMRON (FACTORY INSTALLED) RKE SYSTEM This is the only Factory installed RKE system. The system's transmitter (shown in Fig 2 and Fig 3 ) can lock and unlock the vehicle doors. In addition, if the vehicle is equipped with the ETACS security system (Electronic Time and Alarm Control System), the transmitter can arm and disarm the security system. On the 1994 Diamante, the transmitter has a third button which unlocks the trunk. Fig 2: Omron Transmitter (Diamante) Fig 3: Omron Transmitter (All Others) Operation of Two-Turn Unlocking System and Omron Transmitter: When unlocking the vehicle, the Omron transmitter operates much like the two-turn door lock. Pressing the unlock button once unlocks just the driver's side door. Pressing the unlock button twice will unlock all doors. Pressing the lock button once locks all doors. If one of the doors is not opened after unlocking the vehicle with the transmitter, all doors automatically RE-LOCK within 30-seconds. This is a safety feature that prevents accidental vehicle unlocking. On some vehicles, if one of the front doors are unlocked using the key but no doors are opened within approximately 10-minutes, the transmitter will not operate. Operation of the transmitter is restored by inserting the key in the ignition, turning the key to the "ON" position, turning it to the "OFF position, and then removing it. VEHICLES WITH TRW (PORT OR DEALER INSTALLED) RKE SYSTEM The primary function of the TRW RKE system is to lock and unlock the doors. If, however, the vehicle is equipped with ETACS, the TRW system also arms and disarms the ETACS security system. See Fig 4 . Fig 4: TRW Transmitter Operation of Two-Turn Unlocking System and TRW Transmitter: When unlocking the vehicle, the TRW transmitter operates differently than the two-turn door lock. Pressing the unlock button once unlocks all doors and disarms the security system. Pressing the lock button once locks all doors and, if the vehicle is equipped with ETACS, arms the ETACS security system. VEHICLES WITH CODE ALARM (DEALER INSTALLED) RKE/ALARM SYSTEM The Code Alarm RKE system locks and unlocks the doors. In addition, the system provides an audible/visual alarm triggered by vehicle shock or unauthorized vehicle entry. The Code Alarm system is armed only when the doors are locked using the transmitter. Operation of Two-Turn Unlocking System and Code Alarm Transmitter: When unlocking the vehicle, the Code Alarm transmitter operates differently than the two-turn door lock. Pressing the unlock button once unlocks ail doors and disarms the security system. Pressing the lock button once locks all doors and arms the. security. See Fig 5 . Fig 5: Code Alarm Transmitter POSSIBLE RKE AND ETACS SECURITY SYSTEM COMBINATIONS ON 1994 VEHICLES 1994 MMSA vehicles may be equipped with one of several combinations of Factory, Port, and/or Dealer installed RKE and ETACS security systems. Possible system combinations include: ETACS security system only Omron only Omron with ETACS security system TRW only TRW with ETACS security system Code Alarm only Code Alarm with ETACS security system Code Alarm with TRW (Use Code Alarm transmitter only.) Code Alarm with Omron (Use Code Alarm transmitter only.) Code Alarm with Omron and ETACS security system (Use Code Alarm transmitter only.)
